Building incidental exercise into your day

Intentional exercise involves setting aside 30 mins to do specific tasks, such as walking or strengthening. Incidental exercise is the activity we do in order to move through the day, and without setting aside time blocks. Knowing this, we can tailor small tasks slightly to build healthy habits.

Here are some examples:

  • Walk laps of the room while on a phone call

  • Stand up/sit down 5 times in every ad break while watching TV

  • Do a couple of stretches while waiting for the microwave or kettle

  • Park your car a bit further away from the shops

  • Balance on one leg while standing at the kitchen bench

Your physio can also help with strategies to follow the guideline for 150 mins of intentional exercise per week.
