Lower Back Pain During Pregnancy
Are you experiencing some low back pain during your pregnancy? Statistics show that more than 50% of pregnant women suffer from low back discomfort, particularly through the second and third trimesters. When you’re pregnant, your centre of gravity is altered, causing a gradual change in posture. Sustained positions then place strain on your back, neck and shoulder muscles causing that nagging dull ache. As your baby develops, your body starts to release a hormone called ‘relaxin’, which helps to loosen the ligaments around your pelvis in preparation for childbirth. As a result, this can cause instability in the ligaments supporting your spine, which can be amplified by muscle weakness prior to falling pregnant. As well as this, weight gain and emotional stress can take its toll on lowering your pain threshold. Here at Balance, we can provide you with education on posture and positions to relieve pain, provide hands on treatment to relieve painful joints and muscle tension and prescribe an exercise program to strengthen key muscles.
